Paulownia: an Environmental solution that makes immediate economic sense
Paulownia wood is:
Light Weight
An average traditional solid coffin weighs 32 kg; A solid Paulownia coffin weighs just 1 / 3 of this.
This helps Funeral Directors comply with Health and Safety manual handling regulations
Paulownia coffins also have an ideal reduced weight for repatriation air freight.
Very Strong and Rigid
It is already used in the construction trade for roof trusses, joinery trade for furniture and in the sports trade for surfboards.
In tests Paulownia has been proven to be stronger than traditional hardwoods such as Oak. It has a high resistance to distortion, shrinking and cracking as well as a very low moisture content - no more cracked shoulders and open mitres.
Attractive
Paulownia has a light blonde appearance, similar to White Ash. It stains well with a variety of colours and can be made to replicate other woods such as Mahogany.
Ecologically friendly
Paulownia is farmed on plantations, so it is sustainable and fast growing. Ready to harvest in just 7 years compared with 25 to 40 years for conventional Oak, Elm and Mahogany woods. It has giant leaves which act as huge lungs to scrub the air of C02 and other greenhouse gases . After harvesting , new trees grow back from the stumps and it can be coppiced, rather than felled similar to Willow harvesting
Paulownia may also be grown with other crops below it such as -wheat, allowing for a natural and more economic use of land.
